Solar Gnome Snail Light: A Little Scout After Dusk

After dusk the backyard gets quiet faster than I like. The sun's gone and I still want something small sitting out there. That's this gnome. He's on a snail with the binoculars up, like he poked around the flower beds all afternoon and now he's staying for the evening with the lights on.

A Leaf Hat, a Lime-Green Snail, and Glowing Lenses

In daylight he's loud in a good way. The hat is moss green and folded like a leaf, veins and all, with a red ladybug near the tip and a blue flower stuck at the brim. He wears a sky-blue tunic, black boots, and a big white beard around that round peach nose. People usually notice the snail first. It's lime green and grinning, with a yellow flower and a red one next to the stalks. The shell is tan and chocolate with spots, kind of like stones after rain. He's about eight and a half inches tall, round and short, more like a visitor than décor.

Rain-Ready Resin, Charged by the Sun

At dusk the binoculars actually light up. Flip the switch on the back of the shell, leave him in the sun, and those two lenses come on white along the path. It's resin, so rain is fine. I set mine in the grass, on a rock, on the porch, even in a planter. There's no cord to hide. Later, when you wander outside, he's already glowing.

The idea is old-fashioned, honestly. People used to tuck little watchers into gardens. This one doesn't hurry. I keep him where I stand after dinner. You'll look over. That beard, that grin. A couple of nights in, I started checking for the glow the way you check a porch light.
